Most airports and nearby areas unlikely to get 5G connectivity and services anytime soon. Here's why.

Image
Fearing that 5G bands that are being used by telecom companies might interfere with the navigation instruments on board most common aeroplanes, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have asked telcos to not install any base stations for 5G that operate in the 3.3-3.67GHz frequency range in certain areas near airports. The DGCA has asked telcos to not place any 5G base station within 2100 or 2.1 kilometres of either end of a runway and to also avoid installing one within a radius of 910 metres from the central line of the main runway of an airport. Furthermore, the DGCA has asked telcos to lower the power of all base stations that fall within 540 metres, beyond the proposed exclusion or buffer zone. The main reason behind the directive by the DGCA and the MoCA is that radio altimetres, one of the most crucial instruments on an aircraft for determining altitude, as well as GPS, the two devices that help pilots navigate in situations of low visibi

Why Twitter is ditching its Prevention of COVID Misinformation policy now and shirking a “huge responsibility”

Image
Much to the dismay of health experts and Twitter users, Elon Musk-led Twitter has announced that the platform will no longer be enforcing its Prevention of COVID Misinformation policy. What this basically means, is that Twitter will no longer be labelling any misinformation on COVID with a special tag on the platform. Medical professionals, researchers and leading health experts have expressed their disappointment about the decision and claim that false and misleading health information around COVID still has the potential to harm individuals and public health, and put lives at risk. “Effective November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy,” the social media platform announced across various places on its website. Towards the end of 2020, the World Health Organization put out a call to action to address what it called the “infodemic,” which aimed to “mitigate harm from health misinformation” that can cause confusion, mistrust, harmful

Apple stopping its ad-spends on Twitter is a big concern for Elon Musk

Image
Twitter, like most social media platforms, heavily relies on advertisers to generate revenue, However, unlike other social media platforms, Twitter has lost a significant number of advertisers ever since Elon Musk took over. With Apple suspending most of its ad-spending on the platform, Elon Musk surely must be worried. Ever since Musk took over, Twitter has lost nearly 50 of its top 100 advertisers on the platform. Up until a week ago, about a third of Twitter’s top 100 advertisers had not advertised on the platform for over two weeks. While the looming recession and economic churn that certain tech companies like Amazon, Meta, Google and Microsoft are facing, maybe a reason why brands are reducing their ad-spends and marketing budgets across social media platforms, the fact that Twitter has become so volatile is particularly concerning for brands and people who manage their brand’s ad-spending on Twitter. The reason why Musk is singling out Apple is manifold. First, Apple on av

Elon Musk is picking a fight with Apple, and no, it has got nothing to do with free speech

Image
Elon Musk is picking up a fight, and while he may be cloaking it as an issue of free speech in America, it really isn’t. Yes, Apple and Google have flagged Twitter for issues with content moderation on the platform, but Musk’s main gripe with Google and Apple has got very little to do with that. Elon Musk started tweeting out about Apple after it was found that Apple has suspended its ad spends on the platform. This is a significant concern for Twitter and Elon Musk given that Apple was one of the biggest advertisers on the social media platform. What’s going on here @tim_cook ? — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 28, 2022 The thing is, Apple isn’t the only company that has suspended its ad spends on the platform . However, given that it was one of the largest spenders on the platform, that too by a mile, is surely hurting Twitter and Musk. Want to use dual SIM cards, including e-SIM, on your iPhone? Here’s step-by-step process

Image
Individuals like to use separate sim cards for their personal and professional usage. But, it was a problem for iPhone users as the iPhone models have just one slot to insert a sim card. However, since the introduction of the iPhone 13 series, users can get the benefit of dual SIM- two active eSIMs or a nano-SIM and an eSIM. Previously, outdated models like iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR also had the option of multiple SIM but a physical one was mandatory. Apple’s iOS 14.5 operating system or subsequent versions must be updated on older iPhone 12 models if you want to use 5G data connections with Dual SIM cards. With iOS 13, your device can only use one cellular data network at once if you are having dual SIMs. Once configured, using multiple or dual SIM with your iPhone enables you to add a local data plan when travelling outside of your home country, allowing you to avoid paying roaming costs. Elon Musk confirms that Twitter will be reinstating most banned accounts in the coming weeks

Image
A couple of days ago, Elon Musk asked his followers via a Twitter poll if the social media platform should give amnesty to people who were banned from the platform and reinstate their banned accounts. Because most of his followers voted ‘Yes’ overwhelmingly, the Twitter and Tesla CEO has now announced that Twitter will be reinstating most of the banned accounts starting next week. Most of the accounts that have been banned, and which did not break local laws will be restored over the next few weeks. About 72.4 per cent of all respondents who took part in the pool voted “yes” toward unbanning accounts, from a pool of slightly more than 3 million votes. Although it is difficult to know who voted and in which direction, the poll was conducted among Musk’s followers, so it wouldn’t be wise to say that the vote reflects the true conscience of the users on the platform. Hate speech on Twitter is at its lowest level, down even from pre-spike levels says Elon Musk

Twitter has always been a cesspool of vitriolic and hateful speech. However, when Elon Musk took the social media platform and declared himself as the CEO, hate speech and the use of racial slurs went up exponentially . As per a report by The Washington Post, the use of certain derogatory epithets for African-Americans, Jews, and East Asians increased by up to 500 per cent on the platform. Elon Musk recently took to Twitter to announce that because of his team at Twitter, not only has there been a significant drop in the use of racial slurs and hate speech over the weeks that he took over, it is in fact down by a third from the pre-spike levels. Twitter amnesty: Elon Musk proposes letting nearly everyone back on the platform whom Twitter had banned

Meta's AI demo pulled offline after testers used it to write racist and inaccurate scientific literature

Meta’s AI division recently unveiled a demo of Galactica, a large language model designed by the engineers at Meta that can “store, combine and reason about scientific knowledge.” The main aim of the Galactica AI model was to assist scientific research by helping scientists write scientific literature in a speedy process. However, users running tests on the model found out that the AI model could generate a bunch of realistic-sounding pieces of text, that actually amounted to nonsense. The model would also generate texts that would be scientifically inaccurate, and in certain cases, downright racist. While some people found the demo promising and useful, others soon discovered that anyone could type in racist or potentially offensive prompts, generating authoritative-sounding content on those topics just as easily. For example, someone used it to author a wiki entry about a fictional research paper titled “The benefits of eating crushed glass.” As a result, Meta pulled the Galact

Elon Musk locks out Twitter staff out of their offices, fearing sabotage as people reject ‘Twitter 2.0’

Image
Elon Musk had recently issued a memo, asking the remaining Twitter staffers to either resign on their own accord or prepare themselves for a more hardcore workplace reset, where employees would have to work for longer hours, over the weekends, and even on days of public holidays. It turns out, most of the remaining people on Twitter’s payroll have decided to not subscribe to Musk’s vision of Twitter, or Twitter 2.0 as he likes to call it. Reports are pouring in, which suggest that many people have either voluntarily and publicly resigned from their position at Twitter, or have simply refused to either accept or turn down Musk’s offer to continue with Twitter. This means that all smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other smart home appliances need to be compatible with the Type-C port going forward. The timeline, however, for each of these devices, is yet to be decided. The decision was taken after stakeholders reached a consensus at a meeting of an inter-ministerial task force set up by the Union government, consumer affairs secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said Wednesday. The government held wide-ranging consultations to standardize charging ports for all compatible smart devices, but it is yet to reach a decision on chargers for low-cost feature phones. With universal chargers and ports, consumers will no longer need a different charger every time they purchase a new device. Besides, the move is also expected to reduce the massive amounts of e-waste. In 2021, India is estimated to have gene
