US designates more Chinese tech companies as offshoots of military, may impose more sanctions

The Pentagon designated over a dozen Chinese tech companies, including Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC), as “military companies,” citing national security concerns for the United States. Among these entities are artificial intelligence firms Yitu Technology and Beijing Megvii, drone manufacturer Chengdu JOUAV, lidar maker Hesai Technology, and tech company NetPosa, all of which operate in the US but haveen been accused of having ties to the Chinese military. These additions to the 1260H list, established under the National Defence Authorisation Act for fiscal year 2021, inform US and international companies about entities potentially supporting Beijing’s military-industrial complex. While being listed does not impose a complete ban, it renders the firms ineligible for Defence Department contracts and may lead to blacklisting by the US Treasury Department, affecting their business prospects. Three Chinese firms were removed from the updated list, but others, like DJI Technolo

Alphabet shares take a hit as revenue from Google Search misses estimates, spends exorbitantly high on AI

Alphabet has reported its earnings and revenue for the quarter ending on December 2023 following which its shares took a hit. Although Alphabet’s revenue from its core business, Google Search did not meet expectations, revenues from other sources were up. However, the costs that Alphabet has incurred in developing and deploying its AI solutions in a bid to take on Microsoft and OpenAI has shaken investor confidence. In the three months ending on December 31, revenue from sales, surged by 15 per cent to $72.3 billion, excluding partner payouts. This surpassed the projected $71 billion, marking the best quarter for revenue growth in seven. Net income amounted to $1.64 per share, exceeding Wall Street’s estimate of $1.59 per share. However, revenue in Alphabet’s core search business reached $48 billion, narrowly missing analysts’ predictions of $48.15 billion. Consequently, the company’s shares experienced a 6.5 per cent decline in extended trading. These disappointing results coincid

AI stocks crash, companies lose $190 billion as Google, Microsoft, other tech companies reveal earnings

On Tuesday, companies in the AI sector experienced a substantial decline of $190 billion in their combined stock market value. This followed disappointing quarterly results from Microsoft, Alphabet, and Advanced Micro Devices, which failed to meet the high expectations of investors. The sell-off highlighted the elevated anticipation created by a recent AI-driven stock market surge, propelling these companies’ shares to record highs with the promise of widespread integration of AI technology in the corporate landscape. Alphabet saw a 5.6 per cent drop as its ad revenue for the December quarter fell short of expectations. The company also announced increased spending on data centres to support its AI initiatives, emphasizing the costs incurred in its competitive battle with AI rival Microsoft and OpenAI While Google Cloud’s revenue growth slightly exceeded Wall Street targets, Microsoft’s Azure outpaced it in growth. UK contemplates passing new tech law that may force Apple to quit, pull out of the market

Apple has come out strongly opposing the UK government’s proposed amendments to the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA) 2016, which would require pre-approval for new security features introduced by tech firms. The amendments suggest that if the UK Home Office rejects an update, it cannot be released globally, and the public would not be informed. The government aims to update the IPA to balance technological innovation with national security. According to the proposed changes, decisions about lawful access, aimed at protecting the country from threats like child exploitation and terrorism, would be made by democratically accountable entities and approved by Parliament. However, Apple considers this an “unprecedented overreach,” expressing deep concern that the amendments could jeopardize users’ privacy and security. The tech giant argues that if enacted, the UK government could secretly veto new user protections globally, preventing Apple from offering them to customers. Apple had pre

Neuralink has implanted brain chip in its first human patient, claims Elon Musk

Neuralink, the brain-machine interface startup founded by Elon Musk, has successfully implanted a brain chip in its first human patient, according to a recent announcement by Musk on the social media platform X. Musk reported that the patient is recovering well, and the initial outcomes of the procedure show promise. The innovative brain implant developed by Neuralink is designed to empower individuals with traumatic injuries to operate computers through their thoughts. In May last year the company secured approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to commence its initial human trials, targeting individuals with quadriplegia resulting from cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Elon Musk revealed that Neuralink’s inaugural product, named “Telepathy,” aims to facilitate control over phones, computers, and a wide range of devices simply by thinking. The initial users of this technology are envisioned to be individuals who have lost the use of

X takes drastic steps to combat Taylor Swift deepfakes, blocks all searches around pop-star

Searches for Taylor Swift on Elon Musk’s X platform have been temporarily blocked after sexually explicit deepfake images of the pop star surfaced and spread widely across the platform. The incident sheds light on the ongoing challenges social media platforms face in addressing deepfakes—realistic images and audio generated using artificial intelligence, often utilized to depict public figures in compromising situations without their consent. Attempts to search for terms such as “Taylor Swift” or “Taylor AI” on X resulted in an error message over the weekend. This measure aims to restrict access to AI-generated explicit content involving the renowned singer. Joe Benarroch, Head of Business Operations at X, stated that this action is temporary and taken with an abundance of caution to prioritize safety. Notably, Elon Musk acquired X for $44 billion in October 2022, and since then, he has reportedly reduced resources dedicated to content moderation, citing a commitment to free speech

Elon Musk to be ousted from Tesla? CEO scared he might be voted out

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, has expressed concerns about the potential of being removed from his position at the company due to his relatively small stake of approximately 12 per cent. During an earnings call, Musk mentioned the influence of shareholder advisory firms like Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services, jokingly referring to them as “ISIS” due to their unconventional ideas. Musk highlighted the possibility of increasing his stake to at least 25 per cent by exploring options such as creating a dual class of shares, similar to Meta Platforms. This revelation follows Musk’s recent appeal to Tesla’s board for a significant stock award and his sale of nearly $40 billion in Tesla stock to cover taxes and fund his acquisition of the social media platform Twitter, renamed X. During the earnings call, Musk shifted the discussion toward Tesla’s potential in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, expressing his commitment to these fields. He stated that without a minimum

Tesla loses over $82 billion, stock plunges 12% in a single day after ‘disastrous’ earnings call

The stock value of Tesla saw a significant dip of just over 12% on Thursday following remarks by CEO Elon Musk highlighting the challenges posed by Chinese electric-car manufacturers, whom he referred to as “the most competitive car companies in the world.” During Tesla’s earnings call on Wednesday, Musk praised Chinese carmakers such as BYD, Geely, and SAIC, emphasizing their excellence and warning that, without trade barriers, they could potentially outshine most other global car companies. Musk’s remarks contributed to a substantial decrease in Tesla’s market capitalization, which plummeted by $82 billion on Thursday. In addition to Musk’s comments on the Chinese market, lower sales projections for 2024 and uncertainty regarding potential interest rate adjustments by the Federal Reserve further impacted Tesla’s market value. The stock traded around $182 on Thursday afternoon, marking a 27% decline year-to-date. Earlier this month, Tesla lost its position as the world’s largest

Padma Awards 2024: Foxconn CEO Young Liu honoured with Padma Bhushan, in strong message to China

India has awarded its third highest civilian honour, the Padma Chushan to Taiwan’s Liu Young-way, the Chief Executive Officer of Foxconn, in a move that will send a very strong message to the Communist Party of China. The 66-year-old Liu is set to receive the accolade in a ceremony later this year, with the presentation to be made by the President of India. The announcement of the 132 recipients across various Padma categories was made on the eve of India’s Republic Day. This recognition comes amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to attract foreign investments and position India as the next manufacturing hub in Asia. It aligns with the broader context of global initiatives to shift supply chains away from China, led by the United States and its allies. Liu Young-way had previously visited New Delhi and held discussions with Prime Minister Modi in March. EVs to hit snag, sales, growth may be significantly lower in 2024, believes Tesla

Tesla’s aggressive strategy of slashing prices to boost sales, coupled with the expenses associated with bringing the Cybertruck into production and other research and development (R&D) costs, has reportedly strained profits in the fourth quarter, according to the latest earnings report released on Wednesday. Despite achieving a remarkable milestone by delivering a record 1.8 million electric vehicles (EVs) in 2023, Tesla’s financial growth did not mirror its sales success. The widening gap in profits can be attributed to the company’s deliberate price cuts aimed at stimulating sales and increased expenditures related to upcoming products. In the Q4 and annual earnings release, Tesla issued a cautionary note, stating that it is currently “between two major growth waves.” While the Model Y and Model 3 have contributed significantly to the company’s success in recent years, Tesla anticipates a potentially lower growth in vehicle sales in 2024 as it gears up to launch a new vehicle

Apple pays Russia a fine of $13.7 million, imposed for abusing its dominant position on the App Store

Apple has settled a Russian fine of 1.2 billion roubles ($13.65 million), according to Russia’s FAS antitrust agency. The fine was imposed due to allegations of Apple abusing its dominant market position in relation to in-app payments, as per a report by Reuters. Apple had previously expressed a “respectful disagreement” with the FAS ruling, contending that the distribution of apps through its iOS operating system did not unfairly favour its products. Russia’s anti-monopoly watchdog, FAS, announced on Monday that it received the payment following a November ruling. The ruling found Apple guilty of preventing app developers from informing customers that they could make purchases outside of the App Store. The payment will contribute directly to the Russian budget, supporting the government’s financial needs amid increased defense spending related to the conflict in Ukraine. This dispute between Apple and Russia’s competition regulator predates the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022

Tesla’s entry has major Indian EV players worried, Mahindra, Tata lobbying for ‘level playing field’

Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra has called for a level playing field between domestic and foreign players in the electric vehicle (EV) market, emphasizing the promotion of local manufacturing. As the Indian government reviews Tesla’s plans to enter the market, Mahindra Managing Director Anish Shah stated that it is crucial for global EV manufacturers to be encouraged to invest in India, as per a report by Reuters. While not directly mentioning Tesla, Shah highlighted the importance of creating a stronger industry within India and avoiding a scenario where manufacturing is primarily conducted outside the country. Mahindra and Tata Motors have reportedly urged Indian officials to maintain the current 100 per cent import taxes on electric vehicles to protect domestic firms and their foreign investors. The government is considering a policy to reduce import taxes, a move that has raised concerns among local automakers. Last year, India sold four million cars, with only 82,000

ChatGPT, Attack! OpenAI is working with US armed forces, making cybersecurity tools for them

The company, renowned for creating ChatGPT, is actively working on open-source cybersecurity software in partnership with the US Defense Department. This signals a broader engagement with public-sector applications beyond the technology’s traditional realms. OpenAI recently modified its terms of service, removing language that prohibited the use of its AI in “military and warfare” applications. Makanju explain
