According to a tipster, the iPhone 17 Pro will move its antennas to surround the rear camera module, similar to the Apple Watch Ultra, to improve reception and stability. Unlike current edge-mounted antennas, this layout is expected to reduce interference, enhance 5G mmWave and Wi-Fi 7 performance, and maintain strong connections in crowded or mobile conditions. Spacewalking astronauts encounter cable trouble while hooking up European lab

Image
Spacewalking astronauts encountered cable trouble Wednesday while attempting to make improvements to the International Space Station’s European lab. Only one of the two lab upgrades was completely successful. NASA’s Mike Hopkins and Victor Glover installed a new antenna on Columbus, one of three high-tech labs at the orbiting outpost. It took a few tries by scientists in Europe to get it turned on properly. No longer needed, the boxy antenna cover was thrown overboard. “Here we go. Countdown: 3-2-1,” Glover radioed as he heaved it safely away from the space station. Elsewhere on the lab, Glover could not hook up all the power and data cables on a science research platform that’s been awaiting activation for almost a year. He managed to hook up four of six cables. They checked out well with power flowing, enabling partial use of the platform. But connectors on two cables would not close all the way, and those had to be capped. Engineers will try to come up with a work-around for a f...

Doomsday clock stops at 100 secs to midnight to shine light on climate emergency

Image
The "Doomsday Clock" illustrating the perils facing the planet and mankind will remain at 100 seconds to midnight this year amid the threats of the coronavirus pandemic, nuclear war and climate change. "The hands of the Doomsday Clock remain at 100 seconds to midnight, as close to midnight as ever," Rachel Bronson, president of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said in a statement. "The lethal and fear-inspiring Covid-19 pandemic serves as a historic 'wake-up call,' a vivid illustration that national governments and international organizations are unprepared to manage the truly civilization-ending threats of nuclear weapons and climate change," Bronson said. The decision on setting the hands of the clock is taken by board members from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which was founded in 1945 by Albert Einstein and University of Chicago scientists who helped develop the world's first atomic weapons. The board members include 13 No...

Around 90,000 more may die from COVID-19 in the next four weeks, predicts White House

The Biden administration launched its new level-with-America health briefings Wednesday with a projection that as many as 90,000 more in the US will die from the coronavirus in the next four weeks — a sobering warning as the government strains to improve delivery and injection of vaccines. The tone of the hourlong briefing was in line with President Joe Biden’s promise to be straight with the nation about the state of the outbreak that has already claimed more than 425,000 US lives. It marked a sharp contrast to what had become the Trump show in the past administration when public health officials were repeatedly undermined by a president who shared his unproven ideas without hesitation. The deaths projection wasn’t much different from what Biden himself has said but nonetheless served as a stark reminder of the brutal road ahead. “I know this is not news we all want to hear, but this is something we must say so we are all aware,” said Dr Rochelle Walensky, the new director of the Ce...

Philips HTL8162/94 Soundbar Review: Elegant design, cool features, average sound

Image
Price: Rs 13,999 Rating: 3.5/5 We have reviewed quite a few entry-level soundbars over the past year. Time to take it up a notch with this recent release from Philips. The HTL8162/94 soundbar sports an eye-catching design, provides good connectivity options and some fancy features like touch controls and a wireless subwoofer, but can it deliver room-shaking performance? Let’s find out. Philips HTL8162/94 Soundbar: Design (8/10) This Philips soundbar is a sizable unit that measures 96 cm in width and close to 10 cm in depth, not factoring in the wall-mount clamps. But since it has a low profile design, it doesn’t look bulky from the front. Its trapezoidal shape is quite cool, and the glass top adds a touch of elegance. The bar has an all-black body with a metal grille that covers the front, and extends seamlessly to the sides. The construction is sturdy, and as a result, the soundbar isn’t the lightest around. You get touch controls for power, audio playback, volume control and in...

Will combining Oxford's vaccine with Russia's Sputnik V make it more effective?

Image
When the efficacy of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was announced in late 2020, there was some confusion. The overall efficacy of the vaccine at stopping people developing symptomatic COVID-19, two weeks after the second dose, was 70 percent. But this wasn’t the whole picture. This figure was based on averaging the results from two groups. In one group, which was given two full doses, the vaccine was 62 percent effective at stopping people developing symptoms. But in the second group, a dosing error meant that volunteers received a half dose followed by a full one. This ended up being 90 percent protective against developing COVID-19. This was intriguing. Why would giving people less of the vaccine lead to a more effective immune response? The answer to this may lie in the design of the vaccine and could mean that there are ways to make this vaccine – and others that use the same design – more effective. How the Oxford vaccine works Vaccines work by exposing the immune system to re...

Eli Lilly's, Regeneron's antibody drugs against COVID-19 raise hopes of preventing infection, hospitalisation

New results extend hopes for drugs that supply antibodies to fight COVID-19, suggesting they can help keep patients out of the hospital and possibly prevent illness in some uninfected people. Eli Lilly said Tuesday that a two-antibody combo reduced the risk of hospitalizations or death by 70 percent in newly diagnosed, non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients at high risk of serious illness because of age or other health conditions. All ten deaths that occurred in the study were among those receiving placebo rather than the antibodies. Separately, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. said partial results from an ongoing study suggest its drug combo completely prevented symptomatic infections in housemates of someone with COVID-19. Importantly, the drug was given as multiple shots rather than through an IV. The need for an infusion has greatly limited the use of antibody drugs in the pandemic because of health care shortages. None of the new results have been published or reviewed by other sc...
