Apple sued by NYU doctor who claims patent on Watch's irregular heartbeat monitoring tech

A New York University cardiologist, Dr Joseph Wiesel, has reportedly sued Apple for alleged theft of the heart monitoring technology used in Apple Watch. Wiesel has reportedly filed a case in federal court in Brooklyn. This information was first reported by Bloomberg.

The report reveals Wiesel's claims that "the Apple Watch infringes his patent for a method to detect an irregular heartbeat". He reportedly said that it was back in September 2017 when he shared detailed information about the patent with the Cupertino-based tech company. Atrial fibrillation method is used in the Apple Watch to detect irregular heartbeat.

As per the report, he described his invention as "pioneering steps" in atrial fibrillation detection by monitoring “irregular pulse rhythms from a succession of time intervals.” Weisel was awarded this patent named as a "method and apparatus to determine possible atrial fibrillation" in March 2006.

The reason why he says he was compelled to sue Apple was that the company, “refused to negotiate in good faith to avoid this lawsuit”. Now, Weisel reportedly wants the court to order the company to pay him royalties and restrict Apple from using his invention without permission.

To recall, Apple launched its Apple Watch Series 5 (Review) in India, which came with the irregular heartbeat detection feature, at a starting price of Rs 40,900, back in September this year.

Apple pays Russia a fine of $13.7 million, imposed for abusing its dominant position on the App Store

Apple has settled a Russian fine of 1.2 billion roubles ($13.65 million), according to Russia’s FAS antitrust agency. The fine was imposed due to allegations of Apple abusing its dominant market position in relation to in-app payments, as per a report by Reuters. Apple had previously expressed a “respectful disagreement” with the FAS ruling, contending that the distribution of apps through its iOS operating system did not unfairly favour its products. Russia’s anti-monopoly watchdog, FAS, announced on Monday that it received the payment following a November ruling. The ruling found Apple guilty of preventing app developers from informing customers that they could make purchases outside of the App Store. The payment will contribute directly to the Russian budget, supporting the government’s financial needs amid increased defense spending related to the conflict in Ukraine.
