Forget Foldables, Bendables Are In: Motorola unveils concept smartphone that can wrap around wrists

At the annual Lenovo Tech World 2023, Motorola, a subsidiary of Lenovo, unveiled an innovative concept phone with a display that can wrap around your wrist.

While foldable screens have been making their way into mainstream technology, this new development takes smartphone design to the next level.

The groundbreaking device features a full-HD+ pOLED display that is highly flexible and can be bent backwards, allowing it to be comfortably wrapped around the wrist, resembling a wristband or a smartwatch.

What sets this concept apart is its adaptive nature, offering multiple stand modes to cater to various user preferences.

In its standard flat position, the device offers a spacious 6.9-inch screen, providing a typical Android smartphone experience. However, it can also transform into a self-standing position with a 4.6-inch display, offering versatility for different tasks.

Users can even encircle their wrist with the device, creating a smart band or smartwatch-like experience, similar to the external display on the Motorola Razr Plus’s cover screen.

Motorola’s innovative concept represents a significant leap in smartphone design, but the company has not provided a specific release date for this unique device as of now.

Notably, Motorola had previously offered a glimpse of its rollable Rizr concept at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2023).

The concept phone competition is heating up, with brands such as Vivo, Transsion Holdings, and TCL also preparing to unveil their own rollable display form factors in 2024. While Motorola is pioneering this wrist-wrapping concept, Samsung remains the leader in the foldable smartphone space.

In addition to its revolutionary display concept, Motorola demonstrated some impressive generative AI features that allow users to personalize their phones. Users can upload or capture images of their outfits, and AI generates images that match their style, adding a new dimension to personalization.

The brand also announced the development of MotoAI, a personal assistant for both PCs and smartphones. Furthermore, Motorola is exploring an AI concept model that enhances the Doc Scanner capability found in Motorola camera systems, an AI Text Summarization tool, and a Privacy Content Obfuscation concept that leverages AI to safeguard user privacy and data. These innovations represent a significant step forward in the ever-evolving world of smartphone technology.
