Tata Motors' Safari and Harrier get first ever 5-star safety rating in India’s new Bharat-NCAP crash tests

In a significant milestone for the Indian automotive industry, Tata Motors, a leading automobile brand, has set a new standard for safety with its flagship SUVs, the new Safari and the premium SUV Harrier.

Both vehicles have earned the prestigious 5-star rating for adult occupant protection and child occupant protection under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat-NCAP), India’s independent safety performance evaluation protocol.

The announcement was made today, showcasing Tata Motors’ commitment to delivering the safest vehicles on Indian roads.

The Bharat-NCAP, benchmarked against global standards, plays a crucial role in advancing road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, praised Bharat-NCAP as India’s independent voice on vehicle safety, emphasizing its alignment with global standards.

He expressed delight that Tata Motors’ new Safari and Harrier achieved the highest achievable 5-star rating, marking a significant accomplishment for the automotive manufacturer.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., received the coveted certification.

Chandra highlighted the importance of Bharat-NCAP as a step forward, providing customers with an objective score to evaluate safety aspects. He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the government, regulatory bodies, and the automotive industry in prioritizing vehicle safety.

Launched in October 2023, the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier, built on the OMEGARC architecture derived from Land Rover’s D8 Platform, secured a five-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests as well.

Both SUVs feature the Kryotec 2.0-litre diesel engine, delivering 170PS of maximum power and 350Nm of peak torque, with transmission options including a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT.

The Bharat-NCAP program is voluntary and applies to the M1 category of vehicles with a gross weight of less than or equal to 3,500kg, encompassing vehicles used for passenger transport with not more than eight seats.

The safety evaluation includes testing the base variant of each model across three critical domains: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and safety assist technologies. Cars undergo rigorous crash tests, including frontal impact, side impact, and pole side impact, receiving ratings ranging from zero to five stars based on their performance.

Tata Motors expressed its commitment to continually enhance vehicle safety, contributing to the broader goal of improving road safety standards in India.
